Vulnerability assessment or penetration test? Knowing the difference
The two terms are often used interchangeably, but they answer different questions. Here's how to choose.
People often use vulnerability assessment and penetration testing as if they meant the same thing. They are related but distinct.
Vulnerability assessment
An assessment looks across systems for known weaknesses, such as missing patches and insecure configurations, and reports them with priorities. It is broad and repeatable.
Penetration testing
A penetration test goes further: skilled testers actively attempt to exploit weaknesses to show what an attacker could achieve. It is deeper and narrower.
Which do you need?
- To understand your overall exposure and build a remediation backlog, start with an assessment.
- To validate defences against a determined attacker, add targeted testing.
Whichever you choose, the value is in what happens next: prioritising findings and fixing them. Our cybersecurity and infrastructure services include remediation support for that reason.
